Freedom is a Precious Gift

It is easy to take freedom for granted if you were raised with it. But most people in the world do not know what freedom is. And, historically, most people have never known freedom. Freedom is a precious gift that is not to be frittered away. Because once it is gone, it is gone. - JBK

On this day, in 1885, Lady Liberty arrives in New York harbor

From The Founders, Religion and Government:

On this day, in 1885, Lady Liberty arrives in New York harbor. Named Liberty Enlightening the World, a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States, she was built to honor American independence.

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886.

Kansas City Weather - June 17, 2017

From US National Weather Service Kansas City Missouri:

Here's our thoughts on this evening's storms timing and possible hazards. Initial storms may be able to produce big hail, damaging winds and even a brief weak tornado. These will likely evolve into bowing segments, similar to last night, producing damaging winds into the overnight hours as the storms track to the southeast. Stay weather aware again this evening and have multiple reliable methods of receiving warnings.

Ron Paul on Cutting Taxes

From Bastiat Institute:

Colonel William Prescott

From The Founding of the United States:

Colonel William Prescott

"The Americans received word that the British were planning to take Dorchester Heights and Bunker Hill. Bunker Hill is in Charlestown, overlooking the town of Boston, and strategically located between the Mystic and Charles Rivers. The British were sniped at by the minutemen on their retreat from Concord, and a 2nd humiliation would not be allowed.
Colonel Prescott was given command of the forces at Charlestown by the Committee of Safety in Massachusetts. His orders were to fortify Bunker Hill and defend it until relieved. After marching from Cambridge he gathered his field officers at the top of Bunker Hill. They decided to build the fortification on Breed's Hill (un-named at that time, but part of it was known as Breed's pasture). Breed's Hill is not as high as Bunker Hill, and is closer to Boston. They worked feverishly all night to fortify the position. A redoubt (earthen fort), breastworks (trench), and rail-fence were hastily built.

The British assaulted the hill twice, incurring great losses. They received more reinforcements, relocated their cannons, and discerned a weak spot on the American line. Colonel Prescott had received few reinforcements, and his men were down to about 3 musket balls apiece. Prescott walked the line and stated "If we can drive them back again, they cannot rally." The third assault was furious. The Americans were surrounded on three sides when Prescott gave the order to retreat. A brave fight ensued with muskets being of no use due to close quarters. The men without bayonets fought with their musket stocks, and hand-to-hand combat ensued. Prescott was one of the last to leave the redoubt. General Warren was killed leaving the redoubt.
The statue of Prescott at the monument was dedicated in 1881, and was sculpted by William Wetmore Story. It commemorates the moment, sword in hand, before he gave the command to fire. It is located outside the monument, on the west side.

The British victory was considered meager and costly. The battle gave notice to the British that the Americans would bravely fight for liberty."

On This Day In History > June 17, 1775: Battle of Bunker Hill begins

From The Founding of the United States:

On This Day In History > June 17, 1775:
Battle of Bunker Hill begins

"British General William Howe lands his troops on the Charlestown Peninsula overlooking Boston, Massachusetts, and leads them against Breed’s Hill, a fortified American position just below Bunker Hill, on this day in 1775.

As the British advanced in columns against the Americans, American General William Prescott reportedly told his men, “Don’t one of you fire until you see the whites of their eyes!” When the Redcoats were within 40 yards, the Americans let loose with a lethal barrage of musket fire, throwing the British into retreat. After reforming his lines, Howe attacked again, with much the same result. Prescott’s men were now low on ammunition, though, and when Howe led his men up the hill for a third time, they reached the redoubts and engaged the Americans in hand-to-hand combat. The outnumbered Americans were forced to retreat. However, by the end of the engagement, the Patriots’ gunfire had cut down nearly 1,000 enemy troops, including 92 officers. Of the 370 Patriots who fell, most were struck while in retreat.

The British had won the so-called Battle of Bunker Hill, and Breed’s Hill and the Charlestown Peninsula fell firmly under British control. Despite losing their strategic positions, the battle was a morale-builder for the Americans, convincing them that patriotic dedication could overcome superior British military might.

The British entered the Battle of Bunker Hill overconfident. Had they merely guarded Charlestown Neck, they could have isolated the Patriots with little loss of life. Instead, Howe had chosen to try to wipe out the Yankees by marching 2,400 men into a frontal assault on the Patriots’ well-defended position on top of the hill. The British would never make the same mistake again."

A Better Way to Express Political Dissent

2017 has seen more than its share of political violence. Riots broke out when certain speakers scheduled appearances on college campuses. And just two days ago there was a shooting at a baseball field at which Republican members of Congress were targeted.

When the U.S. was young there was also plenty of political rancor. But people found more civil ways to express their discontent.

The book Thomas Jefferson: Passionate Pilgrim by Alf J. Mapp, Jr. describes the efforts in Congress in 1802 to repeal the Judiciary Act which was passed during the previous administration:

... Rasping voices of anger exacerbated frayed nerves. Equally abrasive was the crunching of those who devoured apples with a ferocity suggesting that each piece of fruit was surrogate for an opponent. When patrician little Vice President Aaron Burr assumed his place as President of the Senate, replacing a President Pro Tem, the offending chompers hastily stuffed their apples into their pockets.

Kansas City Weather - June 16, 2017

From US National Weather Service Kansas City Missouri:

Strong to severe storms expected later tonight with large hail and strong winds the primary concerns. Strongest activity expected along and north of Route 36, with activity likely weakening as it continues to move southeast with through the early overnight hours.

Old Glory

From U.S. Department of the Interior:

It’s Flag Day! One of the best stories about Old Glory is from Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine in Maryland. During the 1814 Battle of Baltimore, a massive flag measuring 30 feet high and 42 feet long flew over the fort. After a night of British bombardment, Francis Scott Key saw the flag still waving above the fort and was inspired to write the words for the “Star Spangled Banner.” It remains a moving sight to this day.
