On May 4, 2017, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.), chairman of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Aviation Operations, Safety, and Security Subcommittee, held a hearing on the current state of airline travel. Blunt questioned a panel of experts regarding overbooked flights, airplane weight and safety issues, the role of law enforcement, and procedures to safely manage a passenger. During the hearing, Blunt followed up on a letter he and his colleagues sent to the Chicago Department of Aviation and United Airlines regarding their response to the forcible removal of an airline passenger.
