President Obama has all but skipped over Congress in choosing the inner circle to guide his second term.

Counting Vice President Joe Biden, only three congressional veterans have secured Cabinet or Cabinet-level positions going forward this year — down from seven in Obama's first term — and all three served in the Senate but never in the House.

Colbert Busch holds her own against Sanford in debate - The Hill's Ballot Box

Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch held her own against former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) Monday night, avoiding any major stumbles as she sought to prove herself an acceptable alternative to voters in the House campaign's only debate.

The businesswoman wasn't anywhere near as smooth as the seasoned politician, stuttering at times and showing some nerves at the start. But while Sanford got in some shots at her Democratic and labor supporters he failed to land a knockout blow — and she got in some blows of her own, tweaking him for the 2009 extramarital affair that derailed his political career.

State: Our Benghazi probe 'should be enough' for Congress - The Hill's Global Affairs

The State Department on Monday defended its decision not to have lower-level employees testify before Congress about last year's attack in Benghazi, Libya.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is pushing ahead with his investigation of the terrorist assault, and has asked for legal protections for lower-level employees who might be called to testify.

The State Department pushed back on Monday and said the independent probe into the attack "should be enough" for lawmakers.

Internet lobby vows 'wiretap mandate' will be 'dead on arrival' in Congress - The Hill's Hillicon Valley

A lobbying group representing Internet companies including Google, Facebook and Yahoo is fighting back against a draft federal proposal that would make it easier for police to intercept online communications as they occur.

"The Department of Justice has not made the case for granting law enforcement broad new powers over Internet companies for purposes of new wiretap authority. There are a number of serious unintended consequences with this flawed proposal." Michael Beckerman, the CEO of The Internet Association, said in an emailed statement.

"A wiretap mandate for the Internet is dead on arrival," he added.

White House: No deadline for analysis of Syrian use of chemical weapons - The Hill - covering Congress, Politics, Political Campaigns and Capitol Hill | TheHill.com

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday that the administration had no deadline for determining definitively whether Syria had used chemical weapons.

"What I won't do is speculate about how much time might be required to gather the evidence necessary to be able to assess clearly, in a way that has been corroborated and reviewed, whether or not this red line has been crossed," Carney said. "I think all Americans would hope and expect that on a matter this serious that we would be very careful in this process and insist that we gather all the facts."

Inspired Celebrations - Day 2 (April 28, 2013)

April 28, 2013 was the second day of Inspired Celebrations, a benefit for New House Shelter in Kansas City, Missouri. New House has been providing new beginnings for abused women since 1971.

The mission of New House is to provide the tools that allow women to make positive choices and lead self-sufficient lives. For more information about New House, visit www.NewhouseShelter.org.

Day 2 began at 10:00 a.m. with vendor booths and expert demonstrations.

The luncheon at 11:30 featured Mary Carol Garrity, owner of Nell Hill's in Atchison, KS. Ms. Garrity named the store after her maternal grandmother, who was an early Kansas pioneer. Her landmark retail store has become legendary in the decorating world.

Ms. Garrity's presentation about home decorating was conducted in a casual interview-style.

More demonstrations followed the luncheon.

Shortly after 3:00 p.m. the Inspired Chef competition began. Four area chefs were required to prepare an entree and a dessert with ingredients that were unknown to them before the competition. Each chef was allowed to bring three ingredients of their own.

Jasper Mirabile, owner of Jasper's Italian Restaurant, served as emcee.

The contestants included:
  • Aarón Sánchez, Food Network star and owner of Mestizo's Restaurant in Leawood, KS.
  • Richard McPeake, "Master of 'Que"
  • Tatsu Arai, owner of Tatsu's French Restaurant
  • Mark Molelntine, founder, Chef Mark Alan's Sauces & Spices

The judges included:
  • Tate Roberts, executive chef of EBT Restaurant
  • Laura Laiben, The Culinary Center of Kansas City
  • Keith King, KSHB-TV investigative reporter
  • Debbie Gold, Top Chef Masters participant

A former resident of the New House shelter made an appearance. While a resident fleeing an abusive situation, she took some cooking classes that the shelter offered. Later, she relocated and went to cooking school. She is now a chef and has students of her own.

The four contestants were told that the entree would be venison. Each chef had 30 minutes to prepare a venison dish. At the end of 30 minutes, the judges sampled each dish. Each dish had been prepared very differently.

Richard McPeake and Aarón Sánchez went on to Round 2.

Round 2 consisted of preparing dessert from Cheerios and fruit cocktail. Again, each contestant had 30 minutes.

The two desserts were presented to the judges. After sampling, Aarón Sánchez (the one with the funny hat) was declared the winner.

A good time was had by all.

Inspired Celebrations Day 1 Luncheon

Today is the first day of Inspired Celebrations, a benefit for Newhouse Shelter in Kansas City, Missouri. New House has been providing new beginnings for abused women since 1971. For more information, visit www.NewhouseShelter.org.

Today's events included a luncheon featuring Dr. James O'Keefe and Joan O'Keefe, RD. James H. O'Keefe, MD, FACC, is Director of Preventive Cardiology at the Mid America Heart Institute and Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. His wife, Joan O'Keefe, is a Registered Dietitian. At age 27, six months pregnant with her first child, Joan was diagnosed with metastatic cancer. Joan's focus on nutrition and fitness was intensified by this experience.

Dr. O'Keefe began the presentation with a discussion of the importance of good diet, exercise and good relationships.

Much interesting information was presented, with illustrations from Dr. O'Keefe's own family background.

One of the many points that Dr. O'Keefe made was that exercise is important. But too much exercise can be just as harmful as no excercise at all. For example, running is good for a person. But training for a marathon is not particularly beneficial in the long run. The greatest benefits for good overall health will be achieved by running or walking in moderation, coupled with moderate weight training.

Dr. O'Keefe also mentioned that the human body is adapted to run no certain nutrients (found in nature). No one would think of putting water or soda pop into the the gas tank of a car. But we do something similar to our bodies with our choices of (processed) food. The O'Keefe household consumes large quantities of fruits and vegetables. But the O'Keefes are not afraid to eat eggs, chicken, fish, lean beef or lean pork. They avoid sausages and other fatty meats. Nuts are also a good source of protein.

Joan O'Keefe expanded upon the nutritional message.

Mrs. O'Keefe mentioned one time when her daughter needed to have frequent measurement of her blood sugar. The first reading was 76. A few hours after eating a meal high in fruits and vegetables, another reading was taken. The reading was 78. The daughter's blood sugar level had barely budged.

When the body eats the foods that it is adapted to eat, sugar is released into the body at the proper rate. But when the body eats refined foods, high in sugar or starch, sugar is released into the body at a rapid rate. This is followed by a crash. And this causes the body to want more sugar and the cycle is repeated.

Other points made by Mrs. O'Keefe include:

  • Vitamin D is very important for immunity. The recommendation is 2000 IU of D3.
  • Belly fat is very bad. It is a different (worse) kind of fat than that found in the legs and buttocks.
  • A healthy diet includes lots of fruits and vegetables. Protein can be derived from meat and nuts.
  • Green Tea is very healthy.
  • Anything with the word *cream* should be avoided (cream cheese, ice cream, etc.).
A Question and Answer session followed the main presentation.

In the Q & A session, the following were some of the points made:

  • The Mediterranean Diet is very good.
  • The O'Keefes do not eat much starch. When they do, they eat starch from oats or barley.
  • Wheat, generally, should be eliminated from the diet. (Modern wheat is very different from ancient wheat.)
  • Artificial sweeteners make losing weight very hard.

The points mentioned above are not all-inclusive.

Overall, the presentation was very interesting and informative.

Lawmakers head for flights after voting to end airport delays - The Hill's Transportation Report

Lawmakers headed to catch flights at Washington, D.C. Ronald Reagan National Airport on Friday after passing a bill to end furloughs for air traffic controllers that caused flight delays across the country this week.

Many of them were unsure when they got there if their flights would leave on time, or would be delayed due to the sequester like thousands of other commerical flights in recent days.

How Sens. Schumer and McCain teamed up to push immigration - The Hill - covering Congress, Politics, Political Campaigns and Capitol Hill | TheHill.com

Charles Schumer has finally learned to laugh at John McCain’s jokes, and McCain has put aside his concerns about Schumer’s partisan reputation.

Schumer, the senior Democratic senator from New York, and McCain, the senior Republican senator from Arizona, have become the public face of the 844-page comprehensive immigration reform bill now pending in the upper chamber.

The bill’s success will depend largely on the bond Schumer and McCain have forged over the two dozen meetings they’ve held to put it together, many lasting until late at night.

They have established a jocular rapport in public, ribbing each other and seeming to genuinely enjoy each other’s company.

GOP angst grows over leadership fumbles - The Hill - covering Congress, Politics, Political Campaigns and Capitol Hill | TheHill.com

The failure of House Republican leaders to pass a healthcare measure this week exposes a GOP weakness going into the high-profile debt-ceiling talks this summer.

A number of high-ranking Republican lawmakers close to the whip operation told The Hill, on the condition of anonymity, that there has been a “disconnect” with leadership lately.

Unless rectified, that disconnect could hamper Republican efforts to go toe-to-toe with President Obama on raising the debt ceiling. Obama has steadfastly refused to negotiate on the issue while Republicans in the House and Senate are demanding cuts to accompany any debt-limit hike.

Reports that Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the two brothers suspected in the Boston Marathon attack, was placed on a terrorism watch list at the request of the CIA a year before the bombings has heightened fears of an intelligence failure with parallels to 9/11.

Why one doctor quit healthcare in America - Apr. 25, 2013

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

In late 2010, Dr. Grady Snyder saw the writing on the wall. He was burned out, his revenue was shrinking and it was getting too expensive to run his rural practice in Pueblo, Colo.

It was time to quit. On August 19, 2011, Snyder sold his practice to a local hospital 30 miles away.

Lawmakers probe government loan to Fisker as carmaker struggles - Apr. 24, 2013

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

With electric-car maker Fisker struggling to stay in business, lawmakers grilled founder Henrik Fisker on Wednesday over the government's $192 million loan to the ailing company.

Fisker laid off most of its employees earlier this month and missed its first loan payment to the Department of Energy on Monday. The Treasury Department has already seized $21 million in an effort to recover some taxpayer funds, but most of the $192 million remains at risk.

Critics see a rerun of healthcare law in Senate immigration bill - The Hill - covering Congress, Politics, Political Campaigns and Capitol Hill | TheHill.com

GOP critics of the Senate’s immigration bill warn Congress risks a rerun of ObamaCare if it approves the measure.

They argue the 844-page immigration bill mimics some of the worst qualities of President Obama’s nearly 2,000-page healthcare reform law by giving administration officials — chiefly Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano — far too much latitude in implementing the law.

GOP leaders delay ObamaCare vote in face of conservative discontent - The Hill's Floor Action

Lacking the votes, House Republican leaders on Wednesday postponed action on a bill that would have changed President Obama’s healthcare law.

The move was a blow to Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who took the lead in pushing for the legislation, and represents yet another example of House GOP leaders struggling to convince the conservative wing of their conference to back controversial legislation.

Obama, Bush parallels emerge as presidents converge in Dallas - The Hill - covering Congress, Politics, Political Campaigns and Capitol Hill | TheHill.com

Though Obama ran as the antidote to the Bush administration, his second-term challenges mirror those of his predecessor.

Striking parallels are emerging between President Obama and former President George W. Bush as the pair converges Thursday in Dallas for the dedication of the Bush presidential library.

Though Obama ran in 2008 as the antidote to the administration under Bush, defined by unpopular wars and economic strife, the challenges of his second term mirror those of his predecessor.

Sequester This: Administration and FAA Have Made Zero Effort to Avoid Furloughs and Delays - YouTube

No more funny money: Dr. Coburn objects to Leader Reid's proposal to replace sequestration cuts with savings from war spending and outlines areas of egregious spending and waste that should be addressed first before delaying flights to make political points. "This is a contrived situation, because no effort, zero effort by the FAA or the Department of Transportation has been made to have any flexibility in terms of how they spend their money...they don't want flexibility," Dr. Coburn said. "The President is the CEO of this country. He can make this happen with the least amount in inconvenience for the American people. The question is: will he or not...and when you ask the President do you want flexibility, he says no. He says I'll veto your bill...that tells me it's all political."
